ODB++ Input to the Omega Intelligent Engineering System Delivers A Quantum Leap in Costing Accuracy and Speed
March 10, 2000 – Yavne, Israel. Julian Coates, VP Corporate Marketing for Valor Computerized Systems and manager of Valor’s Open Systems Alliances programs, today announced the successful implementation of ODB++ input to Prestim Computer Systems’ Omega integrated manufacturing control system.
Valor OSA Program for High-level Third Party Integration
Prestim Computer Systems is a member of Valor’s Open Systems Alliance program, established to support 3rd parties in developing robust interfaces based on the Valor-funded ODB++ data exchange format. Chris Robinson, Managing Director of Prestim, explains why he first chose to participate in the OSA program: "Many of our customers were already using ODB++ based systems for their DFM and tooling operations. We saw an opportunity to utilize the format’s high level of intelligence and flexibility by integrating the CAD/CAM data captured within ODB++ directly into the costing and planning functions of Omega. As participants in the OSA program, we received full cooperation from Valor - the people who originated ODB++. "
Strengthening the Links of the PCB Data Supply Chain
Julian Coates said: "All OSA members benefit from the full support of Valor in developing and certifying their ODB++ interfaces. We believe that comprehensive formats such as ODB++ require support in the marketplace if they are to be adopted by the industry as a whole, with continuing R&D support. ODB++ was always more than a paper document, and more than a format supporting Valor tools. It is our goal, through the OSA program, to ensure that ODB++ brings value to the electronics industry from a wide basis of solutions providers, allowing the industry to reach new levels of integration and intelligence on a daily basis. We welcome all interested 3rd party vendors to become members of the Open System Alliance program."
ODB++ and Omega – A Competitive Advantage
The Omega costing and production planning system is applicable to several levels of the electronics supply chain. When interfaced with ODB++, Omega functionality can be built into the PCB design process, as well as the bare-board fabrication and new product introduction (NPI) processes of PCB assembly and test operations. Continues Robinson, "Our interface to ODB++ is completely automatic, making the integration fast and accurate. When interfaced to ODB++ data, manual data entry into Omega of cost-drivers from the CAD/CAM departments is eliminated. This leads to far greater costing accuracy and speed, and better collaboration for all members of the PCB supply chain – especially those who have made the choice to implement ODB++."
Over 700 leading design and manufacturing sites worldwide have made the sound business decision to implement ODB++. Now, electronics designers running Valor’s Enterprise 3000 DFM and physical verification system will also be able to perform sophisticated Design-for-Cost analyses concurrently during the design process, based on the ODB++ data flowing from Enterprise 3000 to Omega. With both systems driven by rule sets passed through the supply chain from collaborating Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) providers, virtual integration of multiple suppliers’ process-and-cost constraints into the OEM design operation is achieved.
